Binocular Navigation

Did I see a satellite or ISS tonight? 1-13-08?
Tonight at around 8:30 pst I saw something in the sky going nearly overhead in a straight line due south and fast like when a passenger jet passes over at cruising altitude. But it had no navigation lights and no discernible shape to my unaided eye; the only reason I could see it was because it blocked out the slight bit of light in the sky behind it as it passed, and when I looked slightly away it seemed to faintly reflect ground glare. There was no engine noise that I could hear. From this question I’m sure it’s obvious I wouldn’t know if had seen a satellite; I always assumed they’d be really small (like Jupiter’s moons to a binocular user) but more reflective than this. This was really faint and only noticeable because I happened to be staring in that area of the sky when it passed. It was kind of cool and I’d love to know where to look for info on overflying debris and satellites.
thanks in advance
You didn’t give a location, apart from being in the Pacific time zone. Go to www.heavens-above.com and if you put in your location you can get information on satellite passes, including the ISS. I did a quick search using the Los Angeles area as the location but didn’t find anything later than 7:30 pm local. Some objects that went north to south and passed nearly overhead include the Meteor 1-4 rocket and Cosmos 1315.
