Do people still use opera glasses?

I am going to New York’s Metropolitan Opera for the first time and I want to know if I should expect people to be using traditional opera glasses. I know the Met offers binoculars to patrons, but I’m interested in bringing my own glasses if others do as well. Since I’ve never seen an opera at the Met before, I’d like firsthand advice– preferably from someone who has been to the Met– if it is common for others to bring their own glasses. Thanks!

Absolutely. People will be using traditional opera glasses and more conventional binoculars, especially if one is sitting in the Family Circle. The interesting thing about the Met, is that the higher you go the better the sound. The obvious problem, of course, is being able to see the stage. I bring my opera-glasses, purchased at the Met Gift Shop to every performance I see there.
