Jonathan Ross uses telescopes for TV event

Jonathan Ross is not known for his love of astronomy or his use of telescopes. Indeed, the TV personality and chat show host is more synonymous with getting into trouble with bosses at the BBC and for his dynamic and provocative interview techniques. However, the celebrity has been involved in the production of a three-day TV event being shown on BBC2 in the first week of January, the Guardian reports. Called Stargazing Live, it is to be broadcast from the site of one of the planet’s largest telescopes and the goal of those behind it is to get more people thinking about the heavens. The show will be presented by particle physicist Professor Brian Cox and comedian Dara O Briain and Ross will appear in a number of segments in which he will be learning how to use a telescope. In his quest, he is to be helped by The One Show’s astronomer, Mark Thompson. Commenting on the idea at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch in London recently, BBC Vision director Jana Bennett said the BBC was happy to use Ross for the programmes and these was no acrimony between the corporation and the celebrity following the end of his contract last year. She said: “Jonathan actually left on quite good terms, we never shut the door. We did not say he should not be on the BBC. He’s doing this, he’s doing Bafta film awards. He’s still involved.” The executive went on to note that Ross had telescopes in his home before he was asked to do the show and he wanted to learn how to get more out of them. Ms Bennett added: “He’s someone who’s a huge enthusiast and he’ll be a big advocate. Stargazing Live is about mass participation.” These days, more and more people have access to such technology as it has become cheaper and more abundant.
