Binoculars Novelty

where do I get awesome explorer merchandise, like earthbound trading co?
I want to open a store, like Trading co. in galveston, or Earthbound trading co. in San antonio mall. I was going to call it Adventure Trading co, because that seems to be a theme, or perhaps Professor Jackson’s Oddity Emporium… Anyway, have you ever seen what these stores sell?http://thegreatsmokeymountainsparkway.com/_shoppi/earthbound_trading_company_gatlinburg_tn_peek_inside.htm
It’s things like statues that look like they’re from Africa, swords, fans, books, incense, basically things from exotic locations around the world. I want to do that, but more as a store for explorers (real as well as just novelty), you know, machetes, compasses, binoculars, a book and magazine section, statuary, pictures, etc. Where can I get stuff like this?
You need to make contacts with importer/exporters. World Market and Earthbound all have merchandise marked things like”Handmade in India”. Most people who open “world markets” like that go country to country making contacts. They travel to the Middle East, India, Africa, etc. going to markets and ordering in bulk. World Market’s obviously a chain so they’re more established but Earthbound might be able to tell you where and how they get their merch. I wouldn’t ask them as a prospective competitor but maybe ask them as research or something.
One difficult aspect with importing is customs. You’re going to need to find someone more helpful possibly on another website or even a message board, as this is something that requires knowledge of customs, import laws, etc. A community of people who do these types of businesses would be a lot more helpful than someone on Yahoo Answers. You’re also going to need to find out what’s acceptable. Certain woods for example and other materials are banned, so read up on that. I remember someone I knew who ordered wood chairs they were basically tree stumps that doubled as chairs and customs bore holes into the middle of them checking for drugs and completely ruined them. I also remember reading in the paper about a man who ordered cricket bats. He had a shop and was selling them so he had a large order and customs punched holes in the middle of them making sure they didn’t contain drugs. If you know cricket bats this renders them completely useless. This is something you will have to contend with. Remember customs has the right to seize whatever they want and do with it what they please. They don’t even have to release it to you.
Also there’s actually another store in the Quarry that has something similar. It’s called Whole Earth Provision Co. They do travel gear, but they also have a book section and then knick-knacks from around the world. Their website is here: http://www.wholeearthprovision.com/
